With a total surface area of 85,000 m2 divided among 13 buildings, the new KPN Telecom office complex looks dazzling in the Binckhorst district in The Hague. The more than three million bricks of Kleiwarenfabriek Echt provide atmosphere and cohesion between the buildings. Despite its dense building mass, the complex does not have a massive character.

The “Maanplein” project was built according to the campus model: an open structure with many gardens, ponds, stairs and squares which will set the standard for future office projects.
Dutch-made bricks
Under the name Maanweg c.v., Multi Vastgoed Planontwikkeling and Wilma Vastgoed formed a partnership to further develop the plans of KPN. The master plan was prepared by T&T Design, the design department of Multi Vastgoed. A number of architects were then invited to work out the details of the various buildings: Witt & Jongen, Amsterdam, B&D Architecten, Oosterbeek, and Cees Dam & Partners, Amsterdam.

One of the conditions to guarantee the unity of the project was that all the buildings had to be constructed from reddish-brown English brick. Ultimately, the bricks were not imported from England: “We asked CRH Kleiwaren Beheer to develop a facing brick using the English brick already chosen by KPN as a model,” says Multi Vastgoed Planontwikkeling project manager Klaas Kramer. The result is a rough, reddish-brown extruded stone in Waal format: Tuscany bricks of Kleiwarenfabriek Echt.

To break up the continually recurring colour of the brickwork, all the buildings are provided with white and sandy-coloured wall screens made of natural stone and concrete.
A splendid sight at night
The site’s total design was executed by landscape architects Delta Vorm Groep, Utrecht. The KPN office complex is beautifully landscaped with greenery, ponds and footways.
A great deal of attention has been devoted to evening enjoyment of the complex.
The buildings, but also the water gardens and vegetation, are illuminated at night with spotlights. The footways and ponds have special lighting. Further, the accent of the buildings lies on use of natural materials that require little maintenance and are aimed at durability. Much attention has also been devoted to details such as projecting lower sills, which make the external walls less sensitive to dirt, and use of receding brickwork in the reveals of the windows. In short, it is a model of contemporary architecture that will undoubtedly be imitated.
